Staff Spotlight: Jacqueline Smith

January 7, 2026

Briefly describe your role at Golden LEAF.
At Golden LEAF, I manage awarded grants and support a wide range of program-related activities and special projects. I work closely with the Senior Vice President/General Counsel and the Vice President/Chief of Staff, as well as support our program officers, to move projects forward efficiently. My work includes several special initiatives including the disaster relief initiatives, Golden LEAF Schools, and NC Ag Leads. I also work with Golden LEAF’s Economic Catalyst Program and select SITE and special projects. I help ensure projects are implemented efficiently and effectively.

Describe yourself in three words.
Fun-loving. Organized. Curious.

What’s your favorite part of your job and why?
One of the most rewarding parts of my role is the opportunity to work across a wide range of projects, collaborating closely with other program officers as well as our Senior Vice President/ General Counsel and Vice President/Chief of Staff. My position allows me to engage with nearly every aspect of Golden LEAF’s work.

What is your favorite pastime outside of work?
I love volunteering with my sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and Business and Professional Women in the Triangle and reading. My husband and I play tennis together. I also enjoy spending time with my nieces and nephews.

What is your biggest work-related accomplishment within the last year?
I am the program lead on the Golden LEAF Schools Initiative and have worked closely with Golden LEAF staff and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on its launch. I have also worked with our Senior Vice President on the development of review processes and implementation of the small business loan program through Mountain BizWorks for Hurricane Helene disaster relief efforts. I am very proud of both of these accomplishments over the last year.

What motivates you to support long-term economic development in rural, tobacco-dependent, and economically distressed communities?
I am from a small rural town in Cameron, in Moore County, so supporting rural, tobacco-dependent, and economically distressed communities is deeply personal to me. Through my work at Golden LEAF, particularly with disaster relief and Golden LEAF Schools, I can see the direct impact our funding has on these communities. It is incredibly motivating to know that our work is helping strengthen the workforce, create opportunities for future generations, and support families as they build lasting livelihoods. Being from a rural area, I understand how important it is to have sustained financial commitment and long-term investment in these communities, and that understanding drives my passion for this work.
