Staff Spotlight: Ginger Mustamaa

October 7, 2026

Briefly describe your role at Golden LEAF.
As Director of Programs Administration, I provide leadership and support to help the Programs team operate efficiently, effectively, and consistently. I am responsible for our procedural framework, policy clarification, and creating tools and training that strengthen our grant oversight processes and support Program Officers in their critical work.

Describe yourself in three words.
Purposeful. Collaborative. Curious.

What’s your favorite part of your job and why?
I really enjoy learning more about what drives Golden LEAF’s work. There is so much that happens behind the scenes to support the Foundation’s impact across North Carolina, and gaining a better understanding of how all of those pieces work together has been especially rewarding. It has also helped me see how strong operations support every aspect of the Foundation’s work. I am proud to contribute to that impact in a role that helps maintain the high standards and legacy of excellence Golden LEAF has established.

What is your favorite pastime outside of work?
Life is busy, so I enjoy time alone with a good book. Outside of reading, I love spending time with my family and doing anything outdoors.

What is your biggest work-related accomplishment within the last year?
My first months here have been dedicated to learning existing processes and identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency. I’ve updated guidelines and created a structured plan to support ongoing process improvement, with a focus on creating greater consistency and making processes easier for staff to navigate. I look forward to continuing to evaluate workflows, gather feedback, and identify practical improvements that support both day-to-day operations and the organization’s long-term needs.

What motivates you to support long-term economic development in rural, tobacco-dependent, and economically distressed communities?
I’ve spent most of my career in workforce development, and I’ve seen firsthand how a community’s economic health can shape opportunities for the people in it. When we support long-term, sustainable growth in our rural, tobacco-dependent, and economically distressed communities, we are ultimately investing in people’s ability to build a future in the places they grew up in and want to continue calling home, and that’s a win for North Carolina.
