Staff Spotlight: Evan Benedict

September 10, 2025

Briefly describe your role at Golden LEAF.
I oversee the grant process, including management of our grants management system and the data it contains. My role involves ensuring accurate, efficient workflows that support staff and grantees throughout the grant lifecycle.

Describe yourself in three words.
Analytical, resourceful, collaborative

What’s your favorite part of your job and why?
I enjoy solving complex issues and improving processes. Specifically, I like finding ways to make tasks easier and more efficient for grantees and staff.

What is your favorite pastime outside of work?
I practice Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a grappling art similar to wrestling, and have been training in it for over 10 years.

What is your biggest work-related accomplishment within the last year?
This past year, I’m most proud of how quickly we implemented a new funding opportunity for nonprofits working to respond to Hurricane Helene and identified grantees impacted by the storm.

What motivates you to support long-term economic development in rural, tobacco-dependent, and economically distressed communities?
I grew up in a rural area so I can understand firsthand the kind of challenges facing a rural community. I had a large manufacturer that left the area that I’m from. It employed many people in the region. When the company left the area people had to move because there were not enough good-paying jobs to support all the layoffs. I have seen what job loss means to an area. Because of this lived experience, I am committed to using my skills to help create opportunities and strengthen rural areas that struggle.
