This award provides funding to Wayne Community College (WCC) to support the expansion of workforce training in welding, equipment repair, and safety training in the southern end of the county where there is a high concentration of minority residents, specifically Hispanic populations, who are not currently participating in traditional training programs at the college’s main campus. WCC will work with Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) to renovate a 3,500 square foot classroom and lab space at Southern Wayne High School (SWHS) which will be used by WCPS students during school hours and by WCC on nights and weekends for short-term workforce training. The college will hire a bilingual instructor to address the language barrier of the target population. The project anticipates increasing the number of high school students completing career pathways and the number of adults completing continuing education courses and increasing the number of completers earning third-party/industry credentials or micro credentials. Golden LEAF funds will be used for training space renovations, equipment, personnel, and supplies at the high school campus.
Any project more than a couple of years old may not reflect current Board priorities.
