The force of floodwater from Hurricane Matthew unearthed and ruptured a 60-inch storm drain pipe adjacent to Benson’s Public Works facility. Approximately five feet of water entered the building, causing severe damage to the storage facility, multiple vehicles, heavy equipment, and items stored outdoors. Benson has identified an available vacant building adjacent to the former Public Works site to serve as the new Public Works building. This new building is located at a higher elevation and did not flood during Hurricane Matthew. Town funds will be used to purchase the building and associated land. Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program funds will be used to improve the site, upfit the building, replace equipment, and other related costs.
