During Hurricane Matthew, the Benson Fire Department responded to 62 emergency calls, 32 of which were water rescue calls. During one of these water rescues the Department’s 1996 Freightliner fire engine was submerged in water for an extended amount of time and flooded out. The Town Board of Commissioners decided to replace the truck. Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program funding will cover the costs of the fire engine not covered by insurance or by proceeds from the sale of the damaged truck.
