During and after Hurricane Florence, Southport experienced multiple sewer system failures, particularly on the west side of the system where the infrastructure was older. Because FEMA only covered the replacement of areas of complete failure, the City experienced major strain in areas where repaired sections were connected to deteriorating clay pipe. Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program funds were used to replace compromised sewer infrastructure located under Howe Street.
