During Hurricane Dorian, pump stations were submerged due to the inflow and infiltration of stormwater into the sanitary sewer system. As a result, the wastewater treatment plant experienced flows more than two times greater than capacity and exceeded capacity for several days after the storm had passed. Hurricane Matthew resulted in seven submerged pump stations and wastewater treatment plant flows nearly three times greater than capacity. Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program funds were used for mitigation strategies at pump stations to remedy these issues. The work varied by station but included adding standby power sources, adding stationary bypass pumps, elevating pumps to be above flood levels, and elevating electrical panel boxes to be above flood levels. Funds will also be used for restoring the eroding canal immediately adjacent to the Dawson Street pump station.
