Description:
This grant provided funding to North Carolina State University (NCSU) to collaborate with the NC Fresh Produce Safety Task Force and others to deliver training programs that meet the rules and requirements of the new Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). FSMA requires baseline food safety training for most farm and food manufacturing operations. FSMA affects approximately 2,000 farms and 1,900 food-processing facilities across North Carolina. FDA-approved training programs have been developed but the cost to provide training was unfunded. Golden LEAF funds were used for personnel, travel, communications, and other costs. Approximately 1000 farmers, producers, and related agriculture personnel were trained during the project.
