Three sump pumps in the basement of the Tabernacle Baptist Church failed due to power loss caused by Hurricane Florence. The basement, approximately 7,000 square feet, was used for youth programs, Sunday school, and choir practice. It also included a kitchen and dining area for community programs. Water destroyed three freezers, two refrigerators, food and clothes for the needy, electronic equipment, pews, chairs, youth equipment, tile flooring, and damaged walls. Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program funds were used to reimburse infrastructure repair expenses not covered by insurance proceeds.
