Description:
This grant provided funding to Craven County Public Schools to expand career pathways from high school to higher education and/or employment. The program built upon existing STEM programs at the county middle schools by enhancing training opportunities at West Craven High School that aligned with local employer skill requirements. The project completed the following at West Craven High School: 1) implemented mechatronics and welding curricula that replicated employer environments and resulted in STEM credit-bearing classes and industry certifications for students; 2) provided professional development for staff; and, 3) engaged area employers and higher education partners in curriculum development, mentorships, and instructional planning to better prepare graduates for local employment. Golden LEAF funds were used to purchase mechatronics and welding equipment and curriculum materials, provide professional development, and cover credential testing costs.
