Prior to Hurricane Matthew, Bertie County began exploring ways to add more affordable housing for teachers in the county. The State Employees Credit Union (SECU) has financed similar projects throughout the state and is working in Bertie County to finance the development of 24 housing units exclusively for teachers and state employees. The Disaster Recovery legislation provided funding for the development of new residential structures in area outside the 100-year floodplain. Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program funding will support the construction of new infrastructure to serve new housing.
