Sturgeon City was an educational facility established in partnership with the City of Jacksonville along the bank of the New River. The facility included public water access on the New River. The high-water level and winds during Hurricane Florence damaged the floating dock and canoe/kayak launch located at the end of the boardwalk. Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program funds were used to repair the canoe/kayak launch. FEMA Public Assistance was not available for this project. Sturgeon City served approximately 3,000 students at the facility each year. The launch was open to the public.
