During and immediately following Hurricane Matthew, the Town of Faison became an island with roads blocked from all sides. It took nine days for power to be restored to the town. The Faison Recreation and Wellness Center was an approved Red Cross shelter but lacked an alternative power source. This center also served as the location for seniors in the area to receive meals and was one of two public Wi-Fi spots. Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program funds were used to purchase and install a generator and transfer switch for the Faison Recreation and Wellness Center.
