Flooding from Hurricane Matthew severely damaged the Town-owned building used by the Elizabethtown Volunteer Rescue Squad. To mitigate flooding in the area, FEMA funding was used to demolish the building. The Town identified a site within the downtown area large enough to accommodate the Volunteer Rescue Squad and Elizabethtown Fire Department. Town funds were used to acquire the site. The Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program funds supported the design, engineering, and construction of a new station.
