During tropical storms Julia and Hermine and Hurricane Matthew, woody debris such as branches, logs, and stumps was deposited in streams, creating an excessive amount of material that impeded water flow and caused excessive erosion and deterioration in Wayne County. Obstructed flow in these streams contributed to continued erosion damage, especially in the Grantham and Stoney Creek communities of Wayne County. This Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program was used to complete stream cleanout projects, thereby reducing the risk of flooding to homes and businesses, farm fields, poultry and swine facilities, and surrounding natural habitats.
