Description:
This award provided funding to Southwestern Community College (SCC) to support the expansion of its health sciences programming located in the new Health Sciences building that opened in August 2021, specifically the development of a health sciences simulation training center. The goals of the training center are to provide hands-on training through simulation and live patient interactions. SCC is able to graduate stronger “work-ready” health science professionals. Several programs at the college currently have a student-run clinic, including physical therapy assistant, medical sonography, and therapeutic massage programs. The clinics primarily serve SCC students, faculty, and staff, with some patients coming from the community. This project expands the services of existing clinics and add several new clinic opportunities in respiratory therapy, medical laboratory technology, and radiography. Golden LEAF funds were used for medical training equipment and supplies, and for the salaries and benefits for a simulation coordinator.
