This grant provided funding to the Junaluska Sanitary District to support the expansion of sewer service along Highway 209 to Riverbend School. The infrastructure was anticipated to serve the school, businesses, and residences and create new opportunities for economic growth at the underdeveloped intersection of Highway 209 and Interstate 40. The school’s septic system was nearing the end of its useful life and could not be readily expanded. In addition to facilitating development at the highway intersection, the sewer was expected to serve businesses located there that currently relied on failing on-site treatment systems, thereby aiding in the retention of 79 jobs. Golden LEAF funds were used for costs related to the sewer line extension.
