This grant provided funding to the County of Currituck to mitigate frequent flooding on Bonito Street in Corolla experienced due to its typical barrier island topography and proximity to water. Flooding resulted in property loss, environmental health concerns, and limited access for residents and emergency response vehicles. Bonito Street allows the public to reach a beach access point and provides ingress/egress from the midsection of the subdivision to the State Highway 12 evacuation route. Residential households and a fire department located in the project area benefitted from completion of this project. Flooding was reduced on a primary road out of the development which serves as evacuation route and access point for town emergency services. Golden LEAF funds were used to support implementation of the project that included a pump station with an enclosure, generator, and associated electrical and monitoring equipment, a new force main connected to the existing force main system, a ground well with submersible pump, a stormwater infiltration basin with a gravel drainage layer and perforated underdrains, and reestablished swales. This project expanded the existing groundwater lowering system which includes ten pump stations and a piping system. The county will use special tax funds to maintain the stormwater infrastructure and partially fund county staff for maintenance and oversight.
