Golden LEAF awards $9.7 million to support 1,800 new jobs in Chatham County, region

September 9, 2022

On Friday, September 9, 2022, the Golden LEAF Board of Directors called a special meeting to award $ 9,752,860 to the Town of Siler City to extend sewer to the Chatham Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) megasite to serve Wolfspeed, Inc., a developer of semiconductors for power and radio frequency applications such as transportation, power supplies, and wireless systems.

“The Golden LEAF Board made our first award of $3.6 million to support the CAM megasite in 2016, planting a flag that one day North Carolina would attract a project of this magnitude to this site,” said Golden LEAF Board of Directors Chair Don Flow. “We are proud to be part of the public infrastructure improvements that will enable significant job creation and capital investment. This announcement is a big win for the region.”

The $3.6 million Golden LEAF Major Site Development Initiative awarded to support the CAM megasite provided needed infrastructure to increase site competitiveness and reduce the time needed for site development to attract major projects with substantial job creation and private capital investment.

“Golden LEAF is pleased to support this project that will have a tremendous long-term economic impact on rural Chatham County and the surrounding region,” said Golden LEAF President, Chief Executive Officer Scott T. Hamilton. “The Golden LEAF Board of Directors made the $9.7 million award to Siler City to ensure that there would be sufficient sewer infrastructure to help support the creation of 1,800 new jobs.”
