This job description outlines the objective, primary responsibilities and/or requirements, and qualifications of the Programs Intern.

Mission: Golden LEAF’s mission is to increase economic opportunity in North Carolina’s rural, economically distressed, tobacco-dependent, and economically distressed communities through leadership in grantmaking, collaboration, innovation, and stewardship as an independent and perpetual foundation.

Objective: The Programs Intern will be responsible for assisting the organization in the implementation of its Programs-related goals. This will be accomplished through supporting some of Golden LEAF’s program evaluation, database analysis, grant application review and due diligence, outreach, and grant monitoring activities.

Reports to:  Brynn Fann, Program Officer and A/V Tech Coordinator

Requirements

    • Graduate student in a North Carolina college or university with a background, or demonstrated interest, in local government, economic development, workforce development, agriculture, and similar issues. Master’s of Public Administration students will be considered for the position.
    • Student’s permanent/home address is in a rural, economically distressed NC county (see list).
    • Availability of a minimum 300 hours (not to exceed 30 hours per week, scheduling flexible) at $15 per hour
    • Availability during the Summer of 2025
    • Ability to work at the Golden LEAF office in Rocky Mount, NC at least two days a week
    • Availability to attend Program events located away from the Golden LEAF offices

Primary Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

    • Support Programs-related activities of the Foundation
    • Review grant progress reports, applications, disbursements, and project modifications
    • Analyze and effectively report on project activities, outcomes, and expenditures as reported by grantees
    • Participate in review of grant requests, and conduct due diligence and outreach, including limited travel (overnight stays unlikely)
    • Other duties as assigned in support of Programs operations

Qualifications

    • Must have excellent analytical skills and the ability to distill information
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and follow-up skills
    • Proficiency in standard Office software required and working familiarity with database program(s) preferred as well as ability to learn other software programs
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Identify efficiency improvements within the Programs department
    • Effective time management skills
