The Golden LEAF Foundation is committed to using the funds entrusted to it for projects that show the most potential for strengthening North Carolina’s long-term economy, especially in tobacco-dependent, economically distressed, and/or rural communities. Golden LEAF awards funding for projects that the Foundation’s Board of Directors believes have extraordinary merit and address the Foundation’s purposes as set forth in its Charter.
Generally, projects focused on the following are lower priority and therefore not likely to be awarded funds.
Tourism, arts, or cultural resources
Shell or spec buildings
Emergency services, including fire departments
General social services
Reimbursement for prior expenditures
Capital campaigns or endowments
General maintenance and operational support
Infrastructure not related to economic development
Golden LEAF funds may not be used for acquisition of interest in real property or grant administration expenses.
