This job description outlines the objective, primary responsibilities and/or requirements, and qualifications of the External Affairs Intern.

Mission: Golden LEAF’s mission is to increase economic opportunity in North Carolina’s rural, economically distressed, and tobacco-dependent communities through leadership in grantmaking, collaboration, innovation, and stewardship as an independent and perpetual foundation.

Objective: The External Affairs Intern will be responsible for assisting the organization in the implementation of its External Affairs goals. This will be accomplished through supporting some of Golden LEAF’s outreach strategies in the External Affairs Division, which includes external affairs, communications, and scholarships.

Reports to: Communications and External Affairs Manager

Requirements

  • Preferred sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student by credits at a North Carolina 4-year college or university
  • Student’s permanent/ home address is a rural, economically distressed NC county
  • Availability 240-320 hours (not to exceed 30 hours per week, scheduling flexible) at $15 per hour
  • Availability August 2023 – December 2023 (start /end date and weekly scheduling flexible)
  • Ability to work at the Golden LEAF office in Rocky Mount, NC approximately 1-3 days per week

Primary Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Support outreach and engagement efforts of the Foundation
  • Maintain and update databases
  • Develop original content for Golden LEAF website, newsletter, and/or social media
  • Assist with other outreach such as press releases, presentation materials, newsletters, etc
  • Other duties as assigned aligned with goals of External Affairs division

Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a changing environment
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and follow-up skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, G Suite (Google Drive), and Outlook required
  • Ability to learn other software programs
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Aligned Majors and Areas of Study

Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, English, Policy, Nonprofit Studies, MPA, and other undergraduate/graduate programs in related areas.
