Description:

This award provides funding to Southwestern Community College (SCC) to support a new dental assistant program. The need for dental assistants has been highlighted by community residents, business partners, and government agencies who work with SCC. SCC plans to open a new dental assisting program in the fall of 2023 with 18 students enrolled in a one-year program leading to certification as a dental assistant. Students will learn about dental hygiene, record keeping, scheduling appointments, and X-ray safety. As part of their training students will work directly with patients at the college’s X-ray clinic and with partner clinics, such as the Blue Ridge Free Dental Clinic in Cashiers. Of the 18 students enrolled in the program annually, at least 15 are expected to graduate with two industry credentials. Golden LEAF funds would be used for dental equipment and supplies.
