The Dawson Street area of Elizabeth City experiences frequent flooding causing damage to homes and to roads and other public infrastructure. Area drainage flows in a canal from Park Street to Dawson Street to a wetlands outfall. An undersized drainage pipe under Dawson Street combined with canal bank erosion has resulted in road overtopping and significant residential yard flooding. Golden LEAF flood mitigation grant funds will be used for engineering and construction to improve approximately 560 LF of drainage canal running from Park to Dawson Streets, including installing sheet piling to prevent further erosion; upsizing the culvert under Dawson Street; and dredging the outfall to remove sedimentation impairing drainage. Households and one public entity located in the project area will benefit from completion of the project.
