Ocean Drive experiences frequent flooding from regular rain events as a result of inadequate stormwater infrastructure. The flooding results in ponding up to 18 inches deep and traps residents in their homes. As a result, Oak Island staff have utilized manual pumps to remove the flood waters, which has created a significant cost burden for the town and has started to damage the town’s sanitary sewer pump station. Golden LEAF flood mitigation grant funds will be used for engineering and construction to install a dune infiltration system under the dunes along Crowell Street along with a small pump station and new reinforced concrete pipe drainage. Town funds have been used for preliminary engineering and design. Households in the immediate project area users of the road, and public beach access points will benefit from this project.
Any project more than a couple of years old may not reflect current Board priorities.
