The purpose of this grant is to assist Barton College with the implementation of a ‘partnership school’ program with Margaret Hearne Elementary School located in eastern Wilson County. Margaret Hearne has approximately 463 students with roughly 98% of the student body qualifying for free and reduced lunch benefits. This project will formalize a partnership with Margaret Hearne and provide a program to help improve student achievement in math, reading and science as well as provide mentoring and internship opportunities to Barton College students. The administrations of Barton College, Margaret Hearne and Wilson County Schools have worked together to develop this program and the response to early piloting of some of the activities has been very favorable. Golden LEAF funds would be used primarily for personnel, books/supplies/materials, curriculum materials, training and classroom upfit.
