The North Carolina Heritage Breed Initiative

Organization:
The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy
Amount:
$15,360.90
Program Area:
Open Grants Program
County of Applicant:
Chatham
Year:
2011
Description:

North Carolina farmers have the opportunity to benefit from producing and selling alternative products in emerging markets. One such opportunity involves raising and selling heritage breeds. Heritage breeds thrive with little input from farmers and command premium prices from consumers. This grant will allow the American Livestock Breed Conservancy to undertake an assessment of North Carolina farmers, breeding stock, facilities, and consumer interest in heritage breeds. The assessment will focus on economically distressed areas of North Carolina. Other activities will include developing enterprise budgets and marketing plans, developing coalitions of producers, and promoting heritage breed products.
