Primary Healthcare Access to Support Economic Development of a Rural, Isolated Community in Western North Carolina

Organization:
Mountain Area Health Education Center, Inc.
Amount:
$175,000.00
Program Area:
Open Grants Program
County of Applicant:
Buncombe
Year:
2012
Description:

This grant will provide funding to Mountain Area Health Education Center, Inc. (MAHEC) to help establish a rural medical clinic in the Lake Lure area of Rutherford County to serve the uninsured and Medicaid populations and others. The only two primary care practice facilities within 20 miles of this site are solo practices with physicians nearing retirement age. MAHEC believes it has developed a successful low-overhead, patient-centered medical home model that should be self-sustaining two years after start-up at the new location. It has also identified a family practitioner willing to work in the practice. Mission Health System will provide laboratory, radiology and other clinical services. Golden LEAF funds will help pay for construction and medical equipment costs. The facility will house four new jobs.
