Description:

The Wireless Research Center (WRCNC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to support research, product development, testing and regulatory assistance for current and next generation wireless systems and technologies. This independent engineering and research lab provides access to antenna, RF engineering, and regulatory consulting services to assist organizations and entrepreneurs with concept through pre-production design and testing capabilities in the areas of commercial telecommunications, defense and wireless medical markets. The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to the Center to establish a Portable Wireless Network Test Capability (PWNTC) consisting of three portable towers and radio equipment that can be deployed to most geographic regions of the state. This new capability would enable the WRCNC to aid entities in the evaluation and implementation of a wireless network in lieu of (or prior to) the deployment of a permanent system by testing coverage and quality/reliability of service prior to a costly installation commitment. Demand for the PWNTC is being driven by two primary economic opportunities: 1) an Air-to-Ground next generation technology communication system with an North Carolina company; and, 2) last mile deployment in rural areas by several wireless internet service providers. Additionally, the PWNTC would benefit development of the unmanned aerial system by NCSU, assist current work in the state to create rural smart-grid systems and aid in the evaluation and deployment of emergency communications networks for use in natural disasters when wired communication systems are inoperable due to natural disasters.
