Organization:
Blue Ridge Regional Hospital
Amount:
$307,500.00
Program Area:
Community Assistance Initiative
County of Applicant:
Mitchell
Year:
2011
Description:

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to Blue Ridge Regional Hospital to support the recruitment of two new primary care physicians and one new general surgeon to the hospital in order to help relieve an acute shortage of physicians and to serve Mitchell County whose rural population is low-income and disproportionately elderly. Mitchell County is a Health Professional Shortage Area designated by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services as having too few primary care providers, high infant mortality, high poverty and/or high elderly population. Physician recruitment will result in a positive impact on access to health care needs, relief of an overburdened emergency room, and new job creation.
