Phase 4, Encroachment Partnership with the US Marine Corps

Organization:
North Carolina Coastal Land Trust
Amount:
$50,000.00
Program Area:
Open Grants Program
County of Applicant:
New Hanover
Year:
2014
Description:

The NC Coastal Land Trust and the US Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point have developed the Encroachment Partnership Project to acquire rights to coastal properties for conservation, which, if developed, would encroach upon the mission and growth of MCAS Cherry Point. The partners identified a priority list of parcels which they have steadily pursued and successfully acquired. The effort has helped North Carolina fare well in decisions to deploy units to eastern military bases and air stations and defend facilities against base closure and realignment efforts of the federal government. The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to the NC Coastal Land Trust to support its efforts to complete at least two additional priority encroachment acquisitions on the Piney Island Bombing Range and at Cherry Point’s main base, leveraging at least $1M in capital grants from other sources. Golden LEAF funds will be used to pay for personnel and related costs needed to complete the acquisitions.
