The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is to provide funding to the Swain County Tourism Development Authority to help with the development of river infrastructure needed for two whitewater event competitions and to enhance training/event amenities for area outfitters and tourism. Golden LEAF funds will be specifically used to construct a river rapid/wave shaper component at the Nantahala Gorge. The location has been chosen to host the 2013 World Freestyle Kayaking Championship as well as another international event that together will bring 500 competitors from over 40 countries and a host of spectators to Swain County. The infrastructure to be constructed with Golden LEAF funding is necessary for these events, but will also remain in the river and be available for use by the public, attracting additional tourists to the region.
Any project more than a couple of years old may not reflect current Board priorities.
