This award provides funding to Western Piedmont Community College (WPCC) to support the expansion of its Heavy Equipment Operations (HEO) program which currently only uses simulation equipment. This expansion would add HEO equipment that will allow WPCC’s students to develop skills with equipment that is used by industry. This will help the construction industry which is struggling to meet the demands of Hurricane Helene recovery. WPCC expects to increase capacity from 20 students to 40 students annually with all students receiving simulation training and hands-on training. The training on heavy duty equipment will provide the opportunity for students to earn industry-recognized Level I, II and III Heavy Equipment Operator certifications. The award also provides the required match for an Appalachian Regional Commission grant recently awarded to WPCC. Golden LEAF funds will be used for equipment, instructional technology, and personnel.
