Description:

The North Carolina Community College System seeks funding for continued support of the Golden LEAF Scholars – Two-Year Colleges program. It is expected that at least 1,500 students will receive scholarship awards through this project. Eligible students must reside in a rural county that is economically distressed or tobacco dependent and must demonstrate financial need. The grant would provide scholarships of up to $750 per semester for curriculum students and up to $250 for occupational/continuing education students. The scholarships help cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, credential testing, transportation and childcare for 2018-19 fall, spring and summer semesters. Participating community colleges opt in to the program. Colleges whose main campus is located in a rural county that is economically distressed or tobacco dependent receive more funding for scholarships than other colleges. At least 25% of program funds must be awarded to eligible continuing education students. Continuing education students must be enrolled in a career pathway program or a course that is scheduled for at least 96 hours and leads to state and/or national credential. Since the program’s inception in 2000, more than 11,800 scholarships have been awarded. The request includes 90% of the grant amount for student scholarships. NCCCS also received $25,000 for salary for an administrative position to manage the project.
