The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to the North Carolina Community College System for continued support of the Golden LEAF Scholars – Two-Year Colleges program. It is expected that at least 1,200 students will receive scholarship awards through this grant. Eligible students must reside in a rural county that is economically distressed or tobacco dependent and must demonstrate financial need. The grant will provide scholarships up to $750 for curriculum students and up to $250 for occupational continuing education students. The scholarships help cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, credentialing tests, transportation and childcare for 2017-18 fall, spring and summer semesters. Participating community colleges opt into the program. Colleges whose main campus is located in a rural county that is economically distressed or tobacco dependent receive more funding for scholarships than other colleges. At least 25% of program funds must be awarded to eligible continuing education students. Continuing education students must be enrolled in a career pathways program or a course that is scheduled for at least 96 contact hours and leads to state and/or national credential.
