Program Area:
Open Grants Program
County of Applicant:
Wake
Year:
2013
Description:

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to North Carolina State University to support forest owners, existing and startup wood shops and factories located in fifty of North Carolina’s western counties to supply locally made wood products in wholesale markets which include furniture and home interior furnishing stores. Through the project, NCSU Wood Products Extension will offer training to wood shops and factories in how to design products, configure costs, source materials and market finished goods to store buyers. Project leaders expect 250 wood shops and 125 retail stores to be involved in the project. The project will also result in two business-to-business websites to facilitate commercial interaction among forest owners, wood shops, factories, and retailers. Expected outcomes include the sale of $1 million in finished products created using NC wood products. Golden LEAF funds will be used for salaries, travel, and supplies and materials.
