The purpose of this grant is to assist Pocosin Arts Folk School with the development and construction of a new residential education center dubbed the Scuppernong Riverside Lodge. The facility will provide group lodging and dining space and flexible teaching spaces. The facility will serve East Carolina University as a primary tenant, as well as provide space for the expansion of the Pocosin Arts programming. ECU will use the facility over 50% of the time to support research, education and service programs in Columbia and throughout Tyrrell County. ECU is interested in Tyrrell County as a ‘living laboratory’ for the study of environmental and wildlife issues at the 10,000-acre Palmetto Peartree Preserve as well as for its ‘Semester on the Sounds’ program – an interdisciplinary, semester-long residential program for undergraduates, seeking to engage them in the history, culture, art, people and natural environments of Eastern North Carolina. The Folk School’s programming works to build the creative, technical and business skills of artist/entrepreneurs and promotes the creative economy of the local community and the region.
Any project more than a couple of years old may not reflect current Board priorities.
