Program Area:
Essential Skills in Advanced Manufacturing Initiative
County of Applicant:
Catawba
Year:
2012
Description:

This Golden LEAF grant will assist Catawba Valley Community College with additional equipment purchases and instructional capacity to deliver quality, hands-on instruction to an increased number of students to meet the growing demand for workers trained in automated manufacturing (Mechatronics I & II) and as Certified Production Technicians and Logistics Technicians. Ten area companies have written letters of support for the initiative expressing interest in offering internship opportunities and interviewing graduates for an identified 860 positions they are looking to fill over the next 2 to 3 years. Currently, CVCC has basic training capabilities in advanced manufacturing but lacks the equipment and instructional capacity to provide simulated production skills training that individuals must master to qualify for employment in area advanced manufacturing facilities. Funds will be used to purchase additional equipment and software to simulate production cell work environments, hire additional instructional staff to reduce the student/instructor ratio to acceptable levels, and assist Education Matters, an initiative of the college focused on STEM education and industry employment connections, with efforts to develop career pathways between the college and district for Alexander County students and continue work in Catawba schools systems.
