Program Area:
Open Grants Program
County of Applicant:
Wake
Year:
2012
Description:

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to NCSU for a second year of support for work to address challenges to Fraser firs and ornamental hemlocks resulting from the invasion of the balsam woolly adelgid and hemlock woolly adelgid. The project seeks to identify or produce lines of Fraser fir and hemlock genetically resistant to or tolerant of adelgids. This will reduce production costs for Christmas tree growers and help restore the market for hemlocks in the nursery industry.
