Alamance County EDA/Project Swordfish – Infrastructure

Organization:
City of Graham
Amount:
$900,000.00
Program Area:
Economic Catalyst Program
County of Applicant:
Alamance
Year:
2013
Description:

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to the City Graham to construct public water and sewer infrastructure in an area between Mebane and Graham that would serve a site at which Walmart will construct a food warehouse and distribution facility. The Walmart warehouse and distribution center will create 450 positions at the new facility by the end of 2018 with an average annual wage of $35,374, plus benefits. Jobs include freight handlers, forklift operators and supervisory positions. The Walmart warehouse and distribution center will make a capital investment of $100 million. The project includes potential for later expansion which would lead to an additional 160 jobs and $50 million in capital investment. In addition to the immediate goal of supporting the Walmart warehouse and distribution center’s location at the site, the project will also establish a 1,400 acre multi-jurisdictional economic development area. The water improvements establish an interconnection between the Mebane and Graham systems, which will create long term benefits for both cities. The total cost of the water and sewer extension is $5.6 million.
