Golden LEAF News - June 2009

Greetings!

The Golden LEAF Foundation has scheduled a second round of outreach sessions throughout North Carolina to provide more potential applicants with information about the new Open Grants Program process and priorities. The Foundation will begin accepting proposals for the Open Grants Program starting July 1, 2009.

The outreach sessions will be conducted via an interactive video conference on June 25, 2009 at 10 a.m. Click here to find the site closest to you. Space is limited, so please contact Tammy Gaulding at tgaulding@goldenleaf.org or 888-684-8404 to register. When calling or e-mailing please indicate which location you will attend and how many will be attending the session.

Nonprofit organizations and governmental entities are eligible for consideration of Golden LEAF grants and are invited to attend the free sessions. Prospective applicants are encouraged to review funding priorities and guidelines for the Open Grants Program posted on the Foundation’s Web site.

Lieutenant governor says small-business help in the works

The General Assembly is considering providing about $3 million in assistance for small businesses, probably in the form of loan guarantees. The Golden LEAF Foundation has reserved $5 million for small-business aid, in addition to the legislation.

$62K to bolster Ashe jobs

The Golden LEAF Foundation awarded $62,655 to Ashe County Government for supporting industry training for several local companies including: Gates, GE, and American Emergency Vehicles. Sen. Goss said that the funds could not have come at a better time.

Golden LEAF Brings Public Safety Fiber Network to Rutherford County

Rutherford County is pleased to announce that on June 30, 2009 the Public Safety Fiber Network will be completed, thanks to a $1.4 million dollar grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The project is providing critical technology infrastructure to Rutherford County, through Golden LEAF's Community Assistance Initiative.

The Golden LEAF Foundation has modified its annual grantsmaking process from accepting grant applications once a year to a rolling process. The new process officially goes into effect on July 1, 2009.

UNC study to develop business-recruitment strategy for Siler City

Thanks to a grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation, Siler City officials are receiving strategic help from the Carolina Center for Competitive Economies to develop and implement a marketing initiative to recruit new companies and jobs. The county has lost around 1,550 jobs due to plant closures and layoffs.

Organic co-op rolls forward

New River Organic Growers is a cooperative network of local farms that seeks to connect fresh produce from the field with consumers. The organization received $100,000 from Golden LEAF for marketing, a refrigerated truck, and several pieces of farm equipment.

Lawyers offer free business help at FSU
Business Week

The N.C. Lawyers for Entrepreneurial Assistance Project will offer a business law clinic for small businesses on June 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Fayetteville State University’s Fayetteville Business Center. The seminar is sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation and is funded in part by the Golden LEAF Foundation.

Agriculture: Easier to find farm fresh foods

Thanks in part to the Golden LEAF Foundation, the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has revamped its Web site to help consumers looking for locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products now have a faster way to find farmers in their area. Agriculture and agribusiness represent the state's number one industry generating more than $70 billion for the economy.

Central Carolina C.C. first Dental Hygiene graduates Carolina Newswire
Central Carolina Community College has graduated its first class through its newly created Dental Hygiene program. The program was funded in part by a Golden LEAF grant.

Columbus County will get economic boost thanks to Golden LEAF Foundation

Columbus County, a part of Golden LEAF’s Community Assistance Initiative, has started to discuss needs for the county.

Grants to help Richmond County Richmond County Daily Journal Richmond County/ Golden LEAF proposed projects will help around 3,000 people and will help attract and keep jobs in the surrounding community.

Through Golden LEAF’s Community Assistance Initiative, a group of diverse Anson County citizens came together to find consensus and a sense of unity, as they sought the best interests of the County. Priorities agreed upon were education, quality of life and workforce development.

Golden LEAF officials introduced the Golden LEAF Community Assistance Initiative process to Robeson County citizens. VP of Programs/ Community Assistance and Outreach Patricia Cabe briefly outlined the process that includes identifying and reaching a consensus on priority issues, prioritizing these issues, developing projects that could lead to desired results and presenting projects to the Golden LEAF board for possible funding.

Farmers markets now take food stamps

Thanks in part to a Golden LEAF grant, area farmers markets will be able to accept food stamps and debit and credit cards as part of a new statewide program designed to increase access to local foods. Asheville City Market, the Madison County Farmers and Artisans Market, and the Yancey County Farmers Market, along with nine other markets across the state, are among the first participating in the 21st Century Farmers Markets program.

Educators gathering support for academies

A group of education leaders and advocates from the east and west – including Golden LEAF – are trying to gather support for two academies of math and science. The schools would be located on East Carolina University and Appalachian State University campuses.
